Treatment of Traumatic Optic Neuropathy with High Dose orticosteroids

Abstract
Seventeen patients with vision loss due to indirect injury to the optic nerve (anatomical section excluded) were retrospectively studied.
High dose intravenous corticosteroids (methylprednisolone) were initiated in all patients. The relationships between the interval to treatment and final visual acuity, the initial and final visual acuity were studied.
Eight of 17 patients who received high dose steroids showed visual improvement and then vision remained static.
The presentation of this study does not allow to extrapolate conclusions about the efficacy of steroid treatment, but serves as a clue for a controversial problem as the management of traumatic optic neuropathy.
